White grape: Chinuri (Chinebuli) for the etymology of the name
Chinuri is one of the most common grape varieties of Eastern Georgia. The content of its name has long been incomprehensible to the ear of a modern Georgian and, therefore, it is spread with different interpretations. For example, today many winemakers actively use the name "excellent", here, it is the best thing. There are other, more or less comical interpretations and interesting scientific considerations, however, a reliable explanation of the historical significance of Chinebuli, I believe, does not yet exist.
Among the historical and famous white grape varieties of Georgia, Chinuri attracts special attention as a quality wine and table grape variety for local consumption. With its botanical-biological characteristics, it belongs to the group of Chinese Kartli grape varieties and rightfully occupies a leading place among the white grape varieties of this region as the main standard assortment.
Chinuri is used to make high-quality table and sparkling wines. Table wine - pale straw-colored, very clean, soft and gentle in taste, with a normal ratio of alcohol and acidity. Sparkling wine - straw-like, very clean, with a pleasant smoothness and cheerful acidity. The "Athenian" wine made with the participation of Chinuri is especially famous. Georgian wine companies produce typical sparkling and traditional Kvevari wines.
It shows sufficient resistance to fungal diseases, especially ash. Medium or strong growth strength. It does not show great sensitivity to environmental conditions. Easily adapts to both long and short hair. It is also used as a table grape.About the name "Shavkapito"Kartli red grape variety
Shavkapito has become a particularly popular variety in Shida Kartli winemaking in recent years. It is known that its mother terroirs include the area of Liakhvi valley, that is, the southern slope of the Caucasus, the historical Samachablo. Despite this, Shavkapito gives excellent results on other terroirs of Kartli as well, which naturally raises the question of why this variety was not widespread throughout Shida Kartli earlier.
However, it should not be so obvious to declare the black-caped as a samachablo breed. In Kartli we can find another variety with a similar name "Kapita" / "Kapito", which is extremely rare, but the historical area of its distribution was the whole of Shida Kartli. Kapita is extremely similar to Shavkapito in terms of leaf, cluster and grain growth, and it is very close to it in terms of other ampelographic and economic characteristics (Ivane Javakhishvili called Kapita, Shavkapito and Kapiston varieties of one variety and, as will be seen below, not without reason).
This circumstance leads me to believe that the name "blackcapito" is essentially the same as "capita" with the addition of a "black" title. That is, "Shavkapito" is a variation of the name of the essentially the same or very similar grape variety - "Capita". Therefore, when we are interested in the etymology of "blackcap", the main study here is the "capito" part.
About the name "Tavkveri "Kartli red grape variety
Tavkveri is an aboriginal variety of the red grape vine of Kartli. It is intended for the production of light red ordinary wines for economic purposes; At the same time, it provides table grapes for local consumption. It has not been definitively determined when Tavkveri originated or how it developed in the regions of Georgia. We should think that it, like a number of local grape varieties, originated in the heart of Georgia through natural reproduction, and in the later period it underwent evolution and its better form was established mainly in different areas of Eastern Georgia due to the direct influence of man. This is confirmed, firstly, by the many forms of headgear found in Kakheti and Kartli regions (black headgear, white headgear, colored headgear, large-grained headgear, patellar headgear, etc.); Also, the holy Georgian name `Tavkveri', and finally the botanical-biological characteristics, which are typical for the aboriginal grape varieties of Eastern Georgia. With the latter properties, it is a typical representative of the Alazni region and belongs to the group of Kartli grape varieties. Brief written references about Tavkveri can be found in literary sources published from the second half of the 19th century. In this regard, it is worth noting the poem described in Kakheti by V. Gajevski and G. Sharer (6), see also A. Firalov and S. by Shaverdov (8). According to their definition, tavkveri is a black grape variety, with strong growth, dove-colored striped horn, large and dense bunches, round and rather large grains; At the same time, it is known as a high-yielding and ash-resistant variety. The authors named Tavkveri belong to the group of wine grape varieties that give a completely simple dignity. It belongs to the same period
